Secret Spice springs a surprise in G1 Beholder Mile

Daughter of Discreet Cat impresses in her Graded Stakes debut

Secret Spice may have been a handful in the paddock, but she was all business on the racetrack as she charged from just off the pace to win the G1 Beholder Mile at Santa Anita by two-and-a-quarter lengths March 30.

The four-year-old filly by Discreet Cat provided her sire with his second Stakes winner of the day. Earlier on Saturday his three-year-old daughter, Trenchtown Cat, captured the Listed Sanibel Island Stakes at Gulfstream Park.

Content to stalk the leaders from fourth through the early stages of the race, Secret Spice began her rally on the far turn, quickly closing on the front-runners while racing wide. As they hit the top of lane, Secret Spice began to pull away, eventually crossing the wire an easy winner. Favored Marley’s Freedom was second, with Paradise Woods getting up for third.

Secret Spice was bred in Kentucky by Godolphin LLC and races for Little Red Feather Racing. She is out of the winning A.P. Indy mare, Chimayo. Secret Spice’s second dam is Chimichurri, winner of the G3 Tempted Stakes. Secret Spice hails from the immediate family of Canadian Champion, Wonder Gadot.

Secret Spice becomes the 31st Stakes winner for her sire, Discreet Cat. In addition to the Beholder Mile winner, Discreet Cat is the sire of Trenchtown Cat, winner of the Listed Sanibel Island Stakes, and Discreet Angel, a two-time Champion in Puerto Rico.
