Xtension takes his second consecutive G1 Champions Mile

Son of Xaar flies home in Hong Kong

Xaar’s outstanding son Xtension recorded back-to-back victories in the G1 Champions Mile on 6 May, sweeping home to take the valuable contest at Sha Tin.

Settled in fourth position on the rail under jockey James McDonald, the five-year-old entire was asked to quicken once the field entered the home straight and came with an outstanding late run to win by half a length.

Bred by Paul McCartan, Xtension is out of the Stakes-placed Grand Lodge mare Great Joy. He was the winner of the G2 Vintage Stakes and third in the G1 Dewhurst as a juvenile, before finishing third in the G1 Prix Jean Prat at three. Since relocating to Hong Kong in December 2010, Xtension has been a magnificent flagbearer for his sire, finishing out of the first three just twice in 13 starts at Sha Tin.

This was the fourth career victory for Xtension, who has been in the frame on a further ten occasions. Today’s victory takes his earnings past the £2 million mark, and he may aim for further G1 glory at Ascot’s Royal Meeting next month.

Xaar, who stands at Darley in Japan at a fee of 0.5 million yen, is sire of 30 individual Black type winners, 12 of whom have won at Group level.
