Extremely rewarding
Exceed And Excel is a horse with a big reputation. Plus great early success at stud – Champion first-season sire, then G1 star Reward For Effort from his second crop. It added up to exceptional books of mares in Exceed And Excel’s fifth and sixth years at stud: no fewer than 25 G1 winners and 98 Stakes winners – more than in his first four years at stud put together
As Exceed And Excel enters his seventh season at stud, progeny of the multiple G1-winning son of Danehill have already achieved outstanding results and with the offspring of some 25 G1 winners and 98 Stakes winners yet to hit the track, the best is still to come.
With 29 Stakes horses in the southern hemisphere and a further 25 in the north, Exceed And Excel’s ability to produce athletic, precocious speedsters who sell well, run fast and train on, is already well established.
Currently sitting behind barn mate Lonhro on the third-season sires' table, Exceed And Excel (pictured) is the only other sire of his crop to hold down a top-25 position on the general sires’ table. He also has a superior winners to runners ratio than Encosta de Lago, Choisir, Danzero, More Than Ready, Flying Spur, Danehill Dancer and Bel Esprit, to name but a few.
With a plethora of international blood now in Australia, Exceed And Excel has not only provided successful nicks with the colonial blood of broodmare sires Rory’s Jester, Snippets and Scenic, but also with internationally renowned stallions Gone West, Sadler’s Wells, Seeking The Gold and Woodman.
His international success also cannot be ignored, with him recording no fewer than ten Black type performers so far this year, including two smart juveniles (Excel Bolt and Margot Did) who were Group-placed at Royal Ascot, plus three-year-old G3 winner Tech Exceed.
Exceed And Excel is also a leading source of winning juveniles in Europe, and is currently second in the leading sire of two-year-olds table (by number of winners), behind fellow Darley stallion Iffraaj. Exceed And Excel leads the way in terms of Stakes horses with five.
Closer to home, he sired the second-highest number of two-year-old winners in his first and second crops of runners in the southern hemisphere, and currently sits in the same position with his third crop, just one win behind fellow Danehill stallion Redoute’s Choice.
During his first four seasons at stud, the Champion first and second-crop sire covered 22 G1-winning mares as part of high-class books that included 91 Stakes winners.
However, the following two seasons, after the huge success of his first two crops of racing age, Exceed And Excel covered 25 G1 winners and 98 Stakes in winners in total - more than his first four books combined. The average Timeform rating of these mares stands at 103 - a full ten pounds higher than the average for his previous four books.
Among the G1 winners he covered are Oaks heroines Allow, Rinky Dink, Grand Archway and Zacheline; sprinters Ellicorsam, River Dove and the outstanding five-time G1 winner Miss Andretti; while two-year-old G1 winners Carry On Cutie, Preserve, Hasna, Camarilla and Golden Slipper winner Calaway Gal add a level of juvenile precocity.
Breeders who send a mare to the Exceed And Excel this season will have a yearling by the dual G1-winning Champion sprinter when these fifth and sixth crops are running as two and three-year-olds.
