Joku continues his winning ways

Son of Xaar records his third consecutive Black type win with victory in the Kilmore Cup

Xaar’s remarkably consistent son Joku extended his Stakes-winning run to three on 14 February, when defying top weight to land the Listed Kilmore Cup in Australia.

Sent off as favourite for the one-mile contest, the six-year-old gelding was sent straight to the front and the result never looked in doubt as he crossed the line three and a half lengths ahead of his nearest rival.

Joku, who opened his Black type account on 26 December with a win in the Bernborough Handicap before taking the John Dillon Stakes a month later, has now won on nine occasions and has only finished out of the frame three times in his 19-race career.

Joku is out of the Pine Bluff mare Biru Lang, who has produced three winners from three foals to race. Her own granddam – Northern Prancer – is an own sister to outstanding racehorses El Gran Senor and Try My Best.

Xaar, who stands at Darley Japan at a fee of one million yen, sired ten individual Black type performers in 2009, including the G1-placed G2 winner Xtension and fellow G2 winners Balthazaar’s Gift and Seattle Ice.
